Trade-in: how to get the most for your current car
By MAXCAR AUTO · October 3, 2026· 1 min

Trading in your current car is the fastest way to lower the price of the next one: no listing, no strangers test-driving it, and the value goes straight into your deal. Here is how to get the best number for it.
1. Clean it like you mean it
A washed, vacuumed car with no personal items photographs and inspects better. Fix the easy things: a burned-out bulb, low tire pressure, a missing floor mat.
2. Gather the records
Oil changes, tires, brakes, major repairs. A folder of receipts tells the appraiser the car was cared for, and that is worth money.
3. Bring the paperwork
- Title, or the lender's payoff information if you still owe on it.
- All keys and remotes.
- Your ID and registration.
4. Know the market
Check a couple of online estimators the day before. They are a range, not a promise, but they help you recognize a fair offer. Mileage, condition and demand for that model in Houston move the number.
5. Mention upgrades that matter
New tires, a recent transmission service or a factory tow package add real value. Aftermarket stereo or wheels usually do not.
How the value applies
The trade-in value is applied like a down payment: it reduces the amount financed on your next vehicle. If you still owe more than the car is worth, the difference can sometimes be rolled into the new financing — an advisor explains the options and each lender decides.
