Financing a used car in Houston: documents, down payment and what lenders look at
By MAXCAR AUTO · October 3, 2026· 2 min

Most used cars in Houston are bought with financing, and the process is simpler than it looks when you arrive prepared. This is how it works at MAXCAR AUTO, step by step.
What to bring
- A valid government ID.
- Proof of income: recent pay stubs, or bank statements if you are self-employed.
- Proof of address: a utility bill or lease.
- If you have a trade-in: the title or the payoff information from your current lender.
Lenders may ask for something else depending on your situation; an advisor tells you exactly what before you drive over.
How the down payment works
The down payment is the part of the price you pay up front. A larger down payment lowers the amount financed, which usually means a lower monthly payment and better terms. A trade-in counts toward it. Our listings show the vehicle price so you can plan the numbers before you visit.
What lenders review
Each bank or finance company makes its own decision, and they look at the same things:
- Income and job stability — can the payment fit comfortably?
- Credit history — not only the score, but how recent accounts were handled.
- The vehicle — year, mileage and price relative to its value.
- Down payment — more money down reduces the lender's risk.
We work with several lenders precisely so different situations have a place to go. The decision is always the lender's, and no result is guaranteed until the lender approves it.
