How to buy a used truck in Houston: a 10-point checklist

Houston runs on pickups: work crews, ranch roads, towing to the coast. A used truck is the smart way to get one without the new-truck payment — if you check the right things. Here is the list we use on every truck that enters our lot at 13111 Westheimer Rd, Houston, TX 77077.

1. Start with the VIN

Every listing on our site shows the full 17-digit VIN. Run it through the free NHTSA recall lookup and, if you want, a paid history report. Look for title brands (salvage, flood, rebuilt) and odometer rollbacks. In Houston, flood history deserves a second look after any major storm year.

2. Frame and underbody

Get under the truck with a flashlight. You want surface dust, not flaking rust, bent cross-members or fresh undercoating that hides something. Check the hitch area for stress cracks if the truck was used for towing.

3. Tires and brakes

Uneven tire wear points to alignment or suspension issues. Matching tires from the same brand are a sign the previous owner maintained it. Ask when the brakes were last done.

4. Engine cold start

Ask to start it cold. Listen for knocks, watch the exhaust for blue (oil) or white (coolant) smoke, and check for leaks under the engine after it runs a few minutes.

5. Transmission and 4x4

On the test drive, shifts should be smooth with no slipping. If it is a 4x4, engage it in a parking lot and feel for binding or noises. Our listings show the drivetrain in the specs table.

6. Diesel specifics

Diesel trucks (we usually have Cummins, Power Stroke and Duramax units) need a look at the DPF/emissions system, glow plugs and any aftermarket tuning. Ask for service records.

7. Mileage in context

A 150,000-mile truck that lived on the highway can be a better buy than an 80,000-mile truck that idled on job sites. Look at the whole picture: wear on the pedals, seat and steering wheel should match the odometer.

8. Paperwork

Texas title, lien status and a clean odometer statement. At a licensed dealer the title work is handled for you; ask how long it takes.

9. The price you see

Our listings publish the vehicle price. It does not include tax, title, license or dealer fees, so ask for the out-the-door number before you decide.

10. The test drive

Highway speed, a few hard stops, tight turns and a bumpy stretch. Fifteen minutes tells you more than an hour of photos.
